Visual perception is so important to many functional skills in handwriting: awareness of the body’s position as it moves through space, line awareness, using margins on a page, and writing within a given space. Coloring is a great tool in working on these areas as children color within lines and given spaces. But sometimes, kids have trouble staying in the lines or coloring in areas without leaving large spaces uncolored. Verbal and visual cues can help with this.
Children will often talk while colouring whether it be to a friend or an adult. This gives them the opportunity to learn new words and sentences. They use descriptive words to talk about their choices, the scene on the page, the colours and materials they are using, as well as their mistakes and success. There is also some evidence to suggest that colouring can begin to develop critical thinking skills.
Coloring sheets, books, and pages can be integral in preparing children for the more structured work on paper ahead of them. Most children thoroughly enjoy coloring which can foster physical and psychological development in a range of areas. By encouraging their love of coloring at an early age, you’ll contribute to a lifetime of positive benefits. Even though coloring may be perceived as a simple activity, it does provide children an excellent opportunity to develop skills that they can use for the rest of their lives. In addition to gaining crucial foundational skills, coloring provides a powerful outlet to spark their imagination and it provides them with an excellent means to express their inner thoughts and feelings.
Some of those enjoyable lessons include an activity on rhyming words with the infamous “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” song and an exercise that teaches kids how to make an always-delicious peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Visually captivating online games such as Secret Agent Subtraction and Gem Miner typing, accustoms little ones to the keyboard and computer while they learn a few basics on educational subjects.
Picking up the coloring utensil and putting it down to paper requires children to learn hand-eye coordination. If they put the crayon down here, then this is where the color appears.
