Self expression – coloring on a blank ”canvas” (piece of paper), is a way for children and adults alike to express themselves. You can tell a lot about the way a person is feeling by the images that they draw, the colors that they use, etc. A child who draws skulls and other disturbing objects might be crying out for help, in the only way that he/she knows how. A child who draws hearts, suns, and other cheerful objects may be expressing satisfaction, content, and love, in the only way that he/she knows how. It is important to give children a chance to express themselves, and not all children express themselves through words and through writing, many use art.
As creative professionals, we are being lured into the digital world today more than ever. Putting down the keyboard and putting crayon to paper could be the best thing you do all day for your creativity. Coloring is a physical activity that uses fine motor skills and activates different parts of your brain, much like writing by hand. Plus you get to work in full color, not just boring old black and white. It might be hard to step away from the screen, but having your coloring book at hand can help ease your withdrawal symptoms and leave you peering health benefits and feeling more refreshed to work efficiently later.
It’s a rare moment these days when you have no distractions, when you have the luxury of time to allow your thoughts fly free and fearlessly–as you watch the colors bring that underwater ocean scene to life. Don’t spend any time trying to decide on the perfect color for the baby seahorse—let your instinct do the choosing. Your mind has many ideas and inklings to play around with, and you might be surprised at the dots you connect while trying to color within the lines. Because it’s such a simple activity, coloring can produce somewhat of a meditative state which can help with the production of new ideas. Coloring pages in is like an art therapy for your thoughts.
I decided to add these pages to my free printable library. You can gain access to them by signing up for the Team Cartwright mailing list. When you sign up you will receive an email with the password for the library of printable. This contains science worksheets, my Lego coding pages, and alphabet and sight word cards you can use with other toys. This library also has my twin tracking pages to help in those twin baby days. Signing up also adds you to my email list, which you can, of course, unsubscribe from at any point.
Ability to complete the task and satisfaction associated with completing the work, builds confidence. In addition, it enhances our joy and praise after receiving a beautifully colored picture from a child.
While coloring by number, kids hone in on a task, and then focus on specific colors, numbers, or shapes while coloring in their coloring pages. This helps to build skills in focus and concentration. It also gives them a specific task to complete with a number of procedural steps to follow.
